I’m a fan of psychological thrillers. Twisty plots mid to 3/4’s of the way through what’s already been a page-turner thus far leave me giddy. If there’s some squeamish scenes thrown in, all the better - although if they’re absent, that’s okay. Not everything has to be about murders most foul. A good sociopathic mind-effer of a character who may not necessarily be physically violent in the hands of a skilled author can make a mind-blowing story. The best stories, however, are those where I think I know only to realize I have no idea… and when the reveal arrives, my eyes go wide and I think, “OMG - that makes total sense! Why didn’t I see it?â€Even better - something that’s not formula; something that’s unique.This story has a twisty plot.This story was a page turner… but one where I could only take so much at a time. Suspense, for me, is not a comfortable feeling. The rise of anxiety genuine suspense produces in my body isn’t one I can deal with for a sustained amount of time before I need to close the book or pause a movie, get up, pace, walk around, find another activity to take my mind off what I’ve just read or watched in an effort to let the suspense induced anxiety subside significantly before I head back in for another rise and fidgety rush.I averaged about two chapters per sitting before I’d have to get up and relieve the escalating suspense induced stress. It’s not that I didn’t want to keep reading. I simply couldn’t. It was too much and I needed time to decompress before taking more in.This book does contain violence and murder… but it’s handled so Hitchockian. You’re not provided splatter by splatter gruesome details. The violence is painted in broad and abstract strokes. It’s clear there’s violence, torture, murder and all around evil going on - but it’s not gore porn. You’re provided enough information to form the picture in your mind and then your mind is given the horrific freedom to fill in the details. The suggestion is enough to induce serious squeamishness.Psychopaths and sociopaths abound… and you don’t know who is and who isn’t one. And that’s as it should be. They are, after all, masters at blending, mimicking, charming.Close to 3/4’s of the way through, it only then began to dawn on me. Of course I had inklings about who could and couldn’t be trusted fairly early on. But if I said I wasn’t surprised by some of the rest when they were revealed, I’d be lying. The clues are there. I didn’t miss them. But because I was focused on the more obvious characters, I saw but missed piecing together the clues provided about others.The plot was clever. Anything to do with ancient or religious cults in remote places in an ambivalent environment - one that seems interesting and, in certain areas, almost idyllic (the gardens) but ominous and oppressive in others is always a recipe for creepy. The groundwork for the story - brilliant. People who are desperate will do desperate things that, if they were in their more right mind, they would never do. And if it seems too good to be true, well…Loved, too, the constant theme of inner vs. outer. Inside, is where the truth, sometimes ugly truth, resides. Outside is often the facade we present or choose to believe - of ourselves, others, places, situations.I loved this story. It disturbed me. It fascinated me. It had me Googling things to flesh out some of the references - which just made things all the more disturbing once you see the iconography the story draws on to explain the history of the monastery, the island and the current cult. I commend Anni Taylor on a masterful story well told. More, please!
I read this author's first novel which was excellent and decided to investigate her other work. This book was beyond terrifying and yet the storyline sucked me in so completely that I would lose total track of time lost in a Greek island. The play of good and evil was prevalent from almost the beginning but nothing prepares you for the twists and turns you take emotionally while turning the pages. This was exactly as described...a chilling macabre thriller that is written by a master story teller.
**No spoilers, I promise.**A nail-biter, for sure. I was hooked from the first page and would have read it in one sitting but responsibilities begrudgingly forced me to put the book down a few times. When the book wasn't in my hands it was in my thoughts, especially the characters. I rooted for Evie and Grey throughout the story, hoping for a happy ending. As for other characters, the writting was so well done that their accents seemed to jump off the pages. I found this to be interesting and fun.The story itself is a definite thrill ride with many twists and turns that kept me guessing. I love when I can't figure out the ending and, although I suspected a few of the "bad guys" correctly, this did not spoil anything. The book felt a bit long, but was not filled with fluff to add word count, it was just more tension and twists, and never once did I feel the need to skim over anything (a positive sign for me).The premise of The Six is quite interesting. Several addicts are offered a chance at recovery, which includes payment for going through the program, as well as having their debts wiped clean. The exclusive invitation stipulates that the participants will have to successfully complete several challenges worth $10,000 each. In addition, the participants cannot tell anyone where they are or why.The rollercoaster ride of the recovery challenges, the facility they're housed in, and not knowing who to trust turns this into a very good psychological thriller. Many, many times I got lost in the story, turning page after page as quickly as possible so I could discover what happened next.A fantastic read, great storyline, wonderful characters, and a ride that keeps you from ever guessing the surprises that await you at the end. If you enjoy psychological thrillers, this is a must read. Very, very enjoyable book with an ending I never saw coming.Happy reading :)
Wow, crazy stuff! Like who thinks up all that went down in this book! The wife who spirals down and continues down the wrong path. The husband left behind, to be framed and yet still tries to save her. It all centers on a monestary on an island, they think is a refuge of sorts, a place to redeem themselves. Plural because there are others there, a group of very flawed individuals. The horrible wickedness of it all. The chilling thought that people like that could walk among us. And I love games, so the challenges are very creative, 5 stars for that alone! The ending is shocking, you think it can only end one way but then a twist. Warning though it is a very dark story indeed!
I recently finished this book and loved every minute of it. For a while, I enjoyed Gray's chapters the most, but after a while, I enjoyed it all. It literally did have me turning pages wondering what would happen next. Trouble with a great book is that it's hard to match up to it with future books. And I'd like to thank Ms. Taylor for writing a story that had me so engrossed right from the start. I am disabled and stay at home very often, and a good book is very important to me, since I cannot do too much or enjoy too many activities. I enjoyed The Game You Played but enjoyed The Six even more.
I found it was hard to follow with several story lines of other characters and events. I'd put it down then go back. Maybe that was the problem. I also felt those story lines utterly unbelievable. Maybe other readers feel differently. This is one person's opinion.
