From School Library Journal
Gr 2–4—In this alphabet book, in which X marks the spot, each letter is represented by a poem that is paired with a few paragraphs of facts. Some letters stretch to make lighthouses a part of their domain (F is for Festivals, N is for November), but there is at least one illustration of a lighthouse on each spread. A lot of facts can be gleaned from this informational picture book. The poetry flows nicely, for the most part. Illustrations are finely executed and tend toward the dark. VERDICT An additional purchase, especially appropriate for audiences living in the vicinity of the Great Lakes, as well as lighthouse devotees.—Anne Chapman Callaghan, Racine Public Library, WI

Review
B is for Beacon by Helen L. Wilbur and illustrated by Renee Graef is not exactly an alphabet book for small children. It is a coffee table book for small children, older children and curious adults. Wilbur achieves this feat by having a simple rhyme for each letter of the alphabet but including much, much more. Each letter also has three or four paragraphs written in sparse but very informative prose. It is short enough to read it to a younger child; it is informative enough to whet the reader s appetite to find out more. Graef s wonderful illustrations, looking like soft lens images of the people, places and lighthouses, give a wonderful ambiance to the book. It feels like the small town one always wanted to live in with ordinary people working and celebrating in the light and shadows of the lighthouse beacons. One can almost hear the waves crashing or the lonely blast of the foghorn as fog rolls in on a stormy day. The book makes me want to drive along the Great Lakes shorelines, exploring the beauty, history and lore of the once-indispensable Beacons of the Lakes. I recommend it for all ages. --Manhattan Book Review

I am a huge fan of Helen Wilbur's alphabet books, and B is for Beacon is no exception. This is a beautiful book full of information I certainly didn't know about lighthouses and the Great Lakes! What a wonderful and fun way to teach children a bit of Great Lakes history and geography. Did you know that the first lighthouse on the Great Lakes was established by the British in 1781? That the first known lighthouse was located in ancient Egypt? That the US Coast Guard now has responsibility for the Great Lakes lighthouses, and that you can visit, and even stay in some of them? I certainly didn't know any of this. There is much more the book teaches us, and I highly recommend it for children and adults of all ages! And buy it as a gift for the lighthouse lovers and Great Lakes sailors you know as well. They'll love it. A lovely read.
Well done! Wonderful book with gorgeous illustrations and very well written. Most pleased with this acquisition.
