I enjoyed the first two books so making the decision to purchase this book was very easy. By the time I made it through this book I was ready to read a more mainstream book...I picked Las Brujas BTW....I read a chapter to my kids each night (in English) then I re-read in Spanish (to myself).To be completely honest I was a bit reluctant to dive into these types of books because writing compelling stories in your native tongue is challenging enough. The subtle brilliance to these stories is the use of tenses that match the readers level. If you've studied the many tenses of Spanish (as a person learning Spanish as a second language) it's a great feeling to see them being used in context. Granted, you may not understand the word(s) but if you know the conjugation rules, youcan figure out the context of what is being said. From there you can have a fairly good guess and then those words will less likely escape your memory in the long run.Now, there might be some inaccuracies but I believe the purpose of these is two-fold:1. Understanding the general jist2. Learn some wordsI got to the point where I was buzzing through these chapters and didn't bother with the comprehension questions - I didn't understand every word but learnt a few new ones and saw some words I'd previously learnt in context. The point here, I believe, is to use this book as you would any other book you read for leisure. Enjoy the story and move on. I wouldn't try to translate every word (like I tried to do intially) it's a boring, useless excercise and takes the joy out reading.Trust me, when I started reading the first book it was pretty painful - excruciating in fact - but keep going and things get easier and more enjoyable.
The level of Spanish was perfect for my abilities, so I really got some good vocabulary and grammar practice from the book.Most of the stories themselves were too dark for my tastes. They were engaging for the most part, but with a depressing and negative view of human nature. Contrary to the cover, they were not very much about traditional Spanish culture, but about modern times (or they were fantasies).Still, they should have a broad appeal for many.
These stories are great practice for intermediate Spanish students. The first two stories are pretty awful, but I still learned a lot. The next two are quite a bit better, and are even a little suspenseful. These are NOT literary stories. They are written for review, not good plotting or character development. But they're very helpful improving Spanish.
I am an intermediate level Spanish learner. This book was perfect because I did understand the stories, but at times had to concentrate on the exact verb forms. I also learned new vocab and new expressions. I will re-read it until I remember all of the new. A couple of the stories are a bit strange and seemed like there may have been better choices. But all in all, this book is very good to work on fluency.
LOVE IT! Tried many different books, and this on is my favorite so far. I teach myself from reading books, and this one is NOT BORING! Great short stories, super useful vocab that's up to date. Only complaint: the book uses Vosotros verb forms, which most books do not. I find it useless and distracting.
I have greatly enjoyed all of Olly Richards books. They have helped me add greatly to my Spanish vocabulary and learn progressively more tenses and verb conjugation. All of this in a way that plays to my love of puzzle solving! I enjoy the variety and creativity of the stories themselves. Some of the intermediate stories have had a darker theme, but have used vocabulary that is needed in a world that also has a darker side. This is a fun and effective way to apply what I've been learning in textbooks about grammar, styntax and verbs. Thank you Olly!
I've started reading and using this book to improve upon my proficiency level with regards to Vocabulary, Sentence Structure, and How To.."phrase" things. This is becoming an extraordinary resource for the things mentioned above!!!
I was very pleased with how clever and varied the short stories were. Many different genres were employed. I appreciated the author's use of the subjunctive tense along with introducing some very useful idiomatic phrases. The gloss of new words and phrases was helpful at the end of each short story. It was very helpful to have the questions at the end to check the reader's understanding.I certainly hope that Olly will write a similar book of short stores for advanced students soon.
