Frederick V. Romano is a boxing historian with over thirty-five years of experience in the sport. He has served as a research consultant for HBO Boxing, produced and hosted a cable television show devoted to boxing, and acted as a certified amateur judge for matches throughout the New York area, including the prestigious Golden Gloves finals held annually in New York City. His first book, The Boxing Filmography, was published in 2004. He resides in Eastchester, New York.

The evolution of Boxing and Media are woven into the context of these times in a tapestry of pop culture, politics, technology and fascinating anecdotes of the days. We gain a real sense of life in the early days of radio, the war years and the years that followed, especially with respect to the sport, but also with the cultural and economic influences that were so important. I was especially hooked by detail on how the various technologies subtly changed over time and how that would impact the way it was used, the birth of closed circuit and pay-per-view. Also intriguing is the insight into how organized crime influenced both the sport and the media. All the while, we're immersed in so much of the texture of the times that it engages and moves along like the captivating tale that it really is. Dempsey, Tunney and Tex Rickard move through these pages alongside Don Dunphy, Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis and Joe Louis. Fighters, businessmen, mobsters, politicians and movie stars populate and bring life to this entertaining and informative walk through history!
Wow. This is some exceptional body of work. The research is terrific. If you are a serious boxing fan it is filled with golden nuggets of info .. if you are a media fan or interested in the evolution of radio and television in the US it is a must. Well done.
very interesting and well written
This is a first-rate boxing book and a must-have for anyone interested in its rich history. Romano tunes in to a subject that should have been an eye-glazer and makes it not only readable, but fascinating. He is a master of pace who does not overburden us with a recitation of names and factoids but includes interesting, obscure, and at times laugh-out-loud vignettes that color every chapter. "Boxing historians" are a dime-a-dozen these days, but Romano has reminded us of what historians are capable of and his book is something to be celebrated.
Where else, but with this book, can a boxing, radio, or television fan find a "blow-by-blow" history of the sport of boxing? Frederick Romano has carved out an essential niche for himself with this very readable, go-to-guide--an important book which chronicles the growth and popularity of a sport that has shaped our American culture. Romano is an important boxing historian. And his book is a must for your library. ALSO--check out Romano's earlier work, "The Boxing Filmography". In it, he covers, and discusses, American full-length motion pictures in which boxing is a central theme. It's another winner.
