She's an excellent writer, really beautiful with words. But there's a bit of narcissism that is similar to Joan Didion in some of the stories. And I am not a fan of that. Anyone who wants to be a writer could learn scads from MFK. The seller was five star.
I am not a fan of anthologies, but this wasn't the torture I imagined when assigned this title for book club.I enjoyed "The oldest man" the best. The author writes so beautifully that I felt transported to that ageless French village.But many of the chapters just wandered aimlessly and then ended abruptly. The author doesn't really get to the point of this mess until the afterwords. A point I sympathize with and appreciate, but that I feel could have been illustrated more coherently in the prior chapters.
I love this book... was introduced to it a long time ago and lost my other copy. It will not be for someone looking for adventure and excitement. It is a female perspective about aging and often about relationships.. and sometimes parenting as you age. I love this.. and it's not about food which is her usual subject matter.
M.F.K. fisher is always good reading. She writes with clarity and skill so you are engaged right away. Her food writing is superb. I really enjoy her books. Her death was a sad loss for all of us 'readers'.
I'm not finished with this yet; the language and insights are good and densely packed so I'm reading slowly so I won't miss anything. An interesting personal history, an interesting glimpse into an era, and an interesting woman. Thoughtful insights into human behavior and the paradoxes of aging.
Book was just ok.
Stylish writing at its best.
Some of the essays/stories were bizarre, albeit interesting.
