This book turned my stomach. So very many merely walked away from the greatest crime in the history of the world. It didn't end at Nuremberg as so many believe. Those who committed the actual crimes walked away. Hidden by South American countries, no, not just hidden but protected. Eichmann. Mengele, Stangl , Barbie. Too many to name. However I do want to point out that Barbie was first used by the Americans. How this nation could align itself with such a sadist is impossible to understand. Some are not mentioned at all. I was interested in the author's take on the "suicide" of Gustav Wagner but he never touched on the subject. The writer seems to regard Simon Wiesenthal as little more than a clown. I personally take exception to this because, even if he did not do all he took credit for he NEVER allowed the Holocaust to be forgotten. And that was necessary. Serge and Beate Klarsfeld are heroes and should be honored as such. Overall a well researched, well written book that left me feeling rather bitter because after the war was won not one country even seemed to care beyond Nuremberg. Brutal, sadistic, criminals lived long lives, their crimes never revealed. Their victims left with no justice.
Author Guy Walters has done incredible research for this book.He has left no avenue unexplored in his quest to understand the murderous Nazi SS, their unspeakable crimes and men and organizations who have spent years hunting them to get some justice for their victims. A must read for all who want to understand the Third Reich. Superb!A.A.
An excellent background on the subject that gives the reader good insight into some of those sought after the war (too many years in many cases) and those who tracked them down. Sad how many Nazis were given a reprieve to be used for intelligence purposes by many governments and how many helped former Nazis to resettle.
The author managed to cover all aspects of the stories in a way that was easy to read. This is one of the best history books that I have read, and if this wasn't Guy Walter's doctoral thesis, then perhaps it should have been. I usually read about people escaping Nazis. This was different.
The book's pace was a bit uneven. In the beginning Walters moves through a wide variety of war criminals. In the latter chapters he focus heavily on Eichmann, Mengele, Cukers, and Bormann. Details about Nazi Hunters chasing down these four are described in great detail. He constantly and consistently debunks Simon Wiesenthal's accounting and level of participation.Enjoyed the book. Gave me incites key war criminals, as well as the West's 'blind eye' approach to employing war criminals as agents against the Soviets. Could have ended the book on those notes.
A very disturbing story of horrendous wrongs: posturing that tells the world justice will be done:then world wide APATHY and duplicity for the sake of convince and one upsmanship..onto the next problem.
Very detailed and informative. Fans of "Nazi Hunter" Simon Wiesenthal will not enjoy this book.
This is amazing to read of all the horrible criminals such as Mengele' were allowed to live freely in South America and even some like Claus Barbie was used by the USA and Britain and eventually...in his old age...was finally tried. But by then he was too old to care. Why would we do that? He was the Butcher of Lyon (France). His murders included grandparents, parents AND children. Just because they were Jews and even some partisans. If you want to discover what happened to these murderous so and sos, read this book.
